The cabinet began almost four decades ago, when one Cairene Qur'anic bifolium with a lapis and gold medallion surfaced at a discreet London sale. That single impulse seeded a pursuit of Damascus-inlaid basins, Ottoman çatma velvets, Safavid margins, Bijapur jade hilts - a horizon of glaze, watered steel and pigments that map the breadth of Islamic courtly sophistication.

Each piece enters only after unrushed appraisal: conservators read paper fibres, smiths decipher punch sequences, ceramists revisit frit formulations. Operational correspondence flows from Lancashire, while the imaginative geography stretches from Atlantic al-Andalus to the Indian Ocean - always in service of the object's inner story.

Provenance

The chain disclosed.

Arabic-script colophons, waqf seals, loom marks on velvets, and smiths' punches on armour are traced wherever they survive in the dossier for each artwork. Exhibition history and published comparanda are folded in honestly; deliberate silences remain few.

Conservation

Reversible stewardship.

Qur'an bifolia, gilt leather bindings, watered steel and brittle lustre-glaze are stabilized in climates measured for paper, metal and kiln-wear alike. Intervention follows minimal-touch principles so later generations inherit more options, never fewer.

Scholarship

A hospitable cupboard.

The cabinet is inward-facing by choice, yet its notes are outward in spirit: circulated to historians of the Timurid atelier, the Ottoman tile repertoire or Deccani blade workshops whenever questions are courteous. Serious questions receive serious answers.

A Brief Timeline

Four decades distilled.

  1. 1987

    Chance discovery of an illuminated Mamluk Qur'an folio in a provincial London auction; the medallion refuses to loosen its hold on curiosity.

  2. 1995

    First private analogue catalogue numbering thirty-eight manuscripts, ceramics and inlaid-metal objects between Cairo and Granada.

  3. 2004

    The Iznik polychrome tile panel enters holdings, signalling a commitment to Ottoman architectural colour at its sixteenth-century height.

  4. 2014

    Sayedi Collections adopts a discreet curatorial quorum; condition reports circulate before any object leaves storage.

  5. 2021

    Inter-museum correspondence advances two focused loans centred on illuminated frontispieces and cobalt-splashed stoneware alike.

  6. 2024

    A public-facing digital cabinet opens: browsable lineage pages, restrained photography, enquiries answered from Lancashire.
